Last round with St. Mary's

This week at St. Mary's was our last and I think it was a great one. We started out the day using the parachute and playing various games with it. I think this is by far what the students love doing the best. They don't respond to anything better than they do when the parachute is used for various activities. This week we were again in the Special Projects section. We continued our work on designing the gym with our collages that everyone created. I think it looked wonderful and that we did a very good job with it, which most would agree. The game I played was planet invasion, which is a tag game and as we all know the students love tag games. I think went alright, but was a little to advanced for the younger students to understand and they ended up just chasing each other trying to get the flags. I think I should have just done a tag game using the flags.  It would have been easier for them to understand and they still would have loved it. I think my experience at St. Mary's over all was great and I really learned a lot from all the students and my fellow classmates.

It Was Our Special Week!!!

This lab was very different for me, this week we were special projects and I had to come up with a song to sing with the students. The song I sang was called "The Turtle song" which I think the students liked a lot. They all seemed to join in and sing along the second and third time through. It was a little nerve racking at first singing in front of everyone, but after I got going it really wasn't that bad. I stumbled a little at one point, but with a little help I was able to catch back up and keep it going. I was really nervous about doing it when it came time for it. I got there attention when I sang it by myself at first by startling them with the last line which I think helped because it made them want to sing along when it came time for it. As the special projects group we also had to create or decorate something. We decorated the gym doors with construction paper and wrote a few sayings on it. Then we started decorating it with the collages that everyone created. For more information on this weeks lab check this OUT!

Game Adaptations

This past week for Lab we were looking at different games that elementary children actually like to play with. We were actually able to play with some of these games and get an idea of what younger children these days like to play with. The game that I looked at that I would modify is called stackers. Stackers is just what it sounds you stack cups in a pyramid shape and see how fast you can do it. The way I would modify this game or change it is to use bigger or smaller cups for the children to use based on their ablities. The smaller cups would actually be easier for younger children because they have small hands. I think this might make it easier for the children to use. The next thing you could do is actually spread the stacks out so the students had to run a little ways to stack them, this way they could get their heartrate up a little.

This week at St. Mary's was our week to be the gym group. I was the first one to go and I did oceanic rescue. I think it went pretty well, one thing I would have improved with it is to explain it a little more because I felt like the students were confused at first. As far as the throwing and catching there was a mix of abilities. There were a few who were able to throw really well and catch most of the time, but there were also a few students who really struggled with the throwing and weren't even stepping with the right foot when they threw. I had a lot of of participation this week which was a plus because it always seems like they never want to participate in my game. One positive thing that I got out of this week is that I am beginning to feel a lot more comfortable there and really get a long with the students. I really like going there with the students and playing my games and their games with them.

Bringing Sports to St. Mary's

In our third trip to St. Mary's, I think this was my most difficult time out of the three in trying to get students to participate in not only my activity, but all of my groups activity. We had the older students this week and they just wanted to do their own thing, such as play baseketball, they didn't want to be bothered playing our activity. We were finally able to convince some students to participate in my activity which led into one of my other group members activities which we were finally able to get most of the students to participate in. They were very interested in playing tag games and that was what they had their mind set in what they wanted to do.

Wall of Shame to Wall of Fame!!

Although I have never played very many of the wall of shame games the one that I am familiar with is using Fitness as Punishment. I agree that students should be doing some sort of fitness to help their overall health and they should also learn ways to stay healthy throughout their entire life. Physical Education teachers can use games that are fun, but still get students the fitness they need such as teaching field hockey or some form of it if your teaching younger students. This incorporates hand eye coordination, teamwork, and fitness which is really what they need. This is something they can do for the rest of their life that incorporates fitness. The games that we do in class really get the students minds off fitness and into the game, when the time came to do 10 sit ups or 10 jumping jacks as a repercussion they did it willing because it was their fault for having to do it. Making fitness fun would be easy to do for a PE teacher, you can make any simple game out of anything. If its spitting students into teams and then seeing which team can do the combined most amount of push-ups. Fitness is very important to students overall health not even at a younger age, but it will become even more important as they get older in life.

Who's your valentine

In Lab this week I worked with the pre-k students this week. When I got their the students were already outside on the playground. We joined them outside and played tag games and even duck duck goose. The students really liked us playing with them and it helped us start learning their names. I think playing their games outside with them really helped us when it came to our activities later on because they were more willing to participate at first. We did a craft with them for valentines day, we cut out hearts for them to decorate with stickers and crayons. It was a very clean and fun craft for them to participate in and they really enjoyed it. Our activities went fairly well, but I think we could of even made them simpler than they were. The main thing to remember with these students is to keep it very simple. I felt overal it was a good experience and I felt the I had a little more of an idea at this lab.

Feel free to look at my Lab 2 sheet!

Reflective writeup on abuse & Scandals

The videos we watched in class and the recent scandals at two major colleges really make me sad. I couldn't believe how the abusers in the videos were just able to sit and talk about what they did like it was nothing to them. This also follows along with the two scandals both of the individuals who were accused need to man up and admit the wrong that they did. That is one thing I can say about the individuals in the video at least they were able to admit what they did. I think the video help me understand how much of a problem child abuse can be and how important it is to listen to children if they are trying to tell you something. I know as a future teacher I will pay attention to this problem because I don't forsee it getting any better in the future.

Ch. 1 write-up

Teaching through the Physical:

I think that teaching through the physical means teaching through the means of physical movement. Teaching simple things such as jumping, hopping, skipping, or galoping are all examples of learning through the movement. These simple things can lead to more movement techniques that can help students learn more information. According to the book learning through the physical can positively affect the cogonitive and affective development of children. Teaching through the physical is the main way that pe teachers teach their classes.

How does Physical activity impact affective growth:

Affective growth has a lot to do with self esteem and an enhanced since of one's self. As a physical education teacher affective growth has a lot to do with the physical activities you choose in your classes. If you choose activities that children enjoy and like, but also are some what interested will make them want to participate. The more they want to participate in and activity means the will act, interact, and react with other people as well as themselves. This is what the book defines affective growth.
